Safeguarding

We take safeguarding seriously. This policy explains how we keep children safe during online tutoring, and how concerns are reported and handled.

Safeguarding lead and contact

Grow Up Tutoring has a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) responsible for overseeing safeguarding across all lessons.

If you have a safeguarding concern, please email [email protected] or use our contact form. We will respond as soon as possible.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

Tutor checks and standards

We take care to ensure tutors working with children are suitable and safe. This includes:

  • Enhanced DBS checks for tutors working with children.

  • Safeguarding expectations for all tutors delivering lessons through Grow Up Tutoring.

  • Professional boundaries and conduct are required at all times.

We do not tolerate inappropriate behaviour. Any safeguarding concern about a tutor is taken seriously and acted on.

Safeguarding during online lessons

All tutoring is delivered online. Safeguarding is built into how lessons are run.

Professional boundaries and communication

  • Tutors and pupils must not connect on personal social media accounts.

  • Tutors do not communicate with pupils through private or informal channels.

  • All lesson-related communication should go through agreed routes arranged by Grow Up Tutoring and the parent or carer.

Appropriate conduct and content

  • Tutors maintain professional behaviour and language at all times.

  • Lesson content must be appropriate to the pupil’s age and needs.

  • Tutors must not request personal or sensitive information from a pupil beyond what is needed for learning and safety, and this should be handled via the parent or carer where possible.

Lesson environment and supervision

  • Lessons should take place in a suitable space at home where the pupil can focus.

  • For younger children, we expect a parent or carer to be at home and within earshot during the lesson.

  • Parents and carers should tell us about any relevant needs (for example SEN, anxiety, or pastoral concerns) so lessons can be delivered appropriately.

If something feels unsafe during a lesson

If a tutor has an immediate safeguarding concern during a lesson, they may end the lesson and escalate the concern to the DSL.

How we handle safeguarding concerns

When a safeguarding concern is raised (by a parent, carer, tutor, or pupil), we will:

  • Record the concern and review it promptly.

  • Escalate it to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

  • Contact the parent or carer where appropriate.

  • Take action to reduce risk, which may include pausing lessons while concerns are reviewed.

If we believe a child may be at risk of harm, we may share relevant information with appropriate organisations or agencies, including safeguarding authorities, in line with our legal responsibilities. We will only share what is necessary and appropriate.

Lesson recordings

Lessons are not recorded by default.

If a recording is requested, this will only happen with explicit consent from the parent or carer. Where a recording is agreed, we will confirm:

  • Why it is being recorded.

  • Who will have access to it.

  • How it will be stored.

  • How long it will be kept.

Consent can be withdrawn.

Online platforms and access

Lessons may be delivered using online tools such as Google Meet or Google Classroom (or equivalent agreed platforms).

Access is restricted to those who need it to deliver or oversee lessons (for example the assigned tutor and Grow Up Tutoring). We take reasonable steps to keep accounts and systems secure.
